When ear wax becomes a problem
Ear wax is a normal substance that protects the ear canal, but it can sometimes build up and cause discomfort. Common signs include reduced hearing, a blocked feeling, ringing, itching or mild dizziness.
Do not try to remove deep wax with cotton buds or other objects. This usually pushes wax further in and can damage the delicate skin of the ear canal or the eardrum.
- Muffled or reduced hearing
- A feeling of fullness in the ear
- Tinnitus or ringing sounds
- Itching or occasional discomfort
Professional removal at the pharmacy
We offer ear wax removal at Marton Road Pharmacy using microsuction, a gentle technique performed by a trained clinician. A small suction device clears wax while the ear is examined with a microscope or specialist camera.
Microsuction is generally considered safer and more comfortable than syringing because it does not use water and allows the clinician to see exactly what they are doing.
How to prepare for your appointment
Before you attend, we usually recommend using olive oil or an over-the-counter softening drop for a few days. This helps the wax come away more easily during the procedure and can make the appointment more comfortable.
If you have ear pain, an active infection, a perforated eardrum or recent ear surgery, let us know when you book. In some cases we may advise seeing your GP first. You can book an ear wax removal appointment through our services page.
